Through
the use of Proven
Conflict Management Principles coupled with Validated Online Teaching
Methods students learn the strategy and language of conflict management.
Conflict management lessons are constructed to facilitate communications
with teachers, counselors, parents and peers by addressing the
essential elements necessary for anyone, student or adult, to
successfully engage in social transactions.
To
accomplish this, students are guided through a series of eight
interactive lessons. Each lesson is designed to address a series
of objectives that together provide the skills necessary to deal
with basic conflict issues. The course is interest-based and the
students are encouraged to develop win-win attitudes and strategies.
Concepts
are reinforced through the use of real life scenarios and are
designed to provide the students with practical examples of problems
and solutions. All concepts are reinforced throughout the course
and there is an assessment at the end of each lesson.
The
high school course teaches students both conflict management and
vital life skills they can employ now and in the future.
The
contents include:
- Approaches
to dealing with conflict
- Interests
and positions
- Emotional
Management
- Active
Listening
- Assertion
- Decision-Making
- Rational
Thinking
- Communication
Students
first learn to identify the different approaches that they can
choose. Understanding the three approaches - hard, soft and solve
the problem (principled) - is central to understanding how to
address conflict. The skills necessary to achieve a desirable
outcome are developed in each lesson. All elements represent the
application of proven conflict management principles.
In
addition, students gain a common vocabulary necessary to communicate
abstract ideas and feelings. This allows interaction between students
and their teachers and counselors to be immediately more effective.
